A Serena Sutherland Film

The Dissected Afro

A powerful journey across the African Diaspora, where Black communities confront deep-seated traumas and celebrate their shared resilience, reclaiming their stories and identities in the fight for both external and internal liberation.

About the Film

‘The Dissected Afro’ is an open table for honest and open discussions on the modern Black experience from every side of the spectrum. The Black community suppresses much deep-rooted trauma, unconsciously passed down through generations. This cycle not only stunts the growth of the community but also poisons the building blocks set up for the future. Freedom has never been just about escaping racist systems; it's about liberating ourselves from the mental prisons within our minds. At the heart of the documentary is the story of the African Diaspora—a global tapestry woven from shared histories of displacement, oppression, joy, culture and resilience.By travelling to countries like Jamaica, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Canada, the United States, and Colombia but beginning in Toronto, ‘The Dissected Afro’ will explore how Black communities in these countries share common struggles and joys, cultural erasure, and internalized trauma, but also the powerful resilience, culture and solidarity that bind them together across oceans. Whether through stories of cultural pride in Kingston, the resistance in Rio, or the reawakening in Toronto and Paris, the documentary emphasizes that despite the geographical distance, the Black experience is globally interconnected.
